12 aspiring managers achieved the Chartered Management Institute Level 5 Diploma – the first to do so as part of the Amacus, TUC UnionLearn and the Public & Commercial Services Union. The successful learners were presented with their awards by Christine Murray and Sarah Bullock of Amacus and Derek Woods from the London Pensions Service.

Amacus Managing Director – Christine Murray said: “We’re delighted the training has been such a success. It’s a triumph for partnership working, commitment and contribution of those taking part. They’ve really embraced the training and enhanced their skills, which will be great for them and their employer in the future”.

Kevin Rowan, UnionLearn Regional Manager, said: “This has been a hugely successful project and underlines the impact work-based learning can have. It helps to boost skills, improve confidence and also improve productivity so is a real win-win for everyone involved”.

The delegates will now move onto the second stage of the programme – a Foundation Degree managed by Amacus and delivered by its project partner Gateshead College.

Held at Gateshead College’s first-class Baltic Campus, Olympic Gold Medallist – Kriss Akabusi – presented Bronze and Silver Awards to 11 local employers progressing through this three-year programme.

Kriss said “I know from my own career the benefits to be gained from being fit and healthy and how big an impact it can have on your performance in the workplace. It makes good business sense for employers to focus on the wellbeing of their employees and has a massive impact on motivation and productivity”.

Organisations awarded on the evening were – ABB, Akzo Nobel, BAE Systems, Gateshead College, Gateshead Council, HMRC Child Benefit Office, HMRC Contact Centre Directorate, Job Centre Plus, NHS South of Tyne & Wear, Tyne & Wear Fire & rescue Service and South Tyneside Homes.

Held in the Bridge Gallery at Gateshead College’s Baltic Campus, the event aimed to provide a practical guide to workplace health for businesses who have employees who have driving intensive jobs.

The event proved a massive success with many companies from around the region in attendance. Employers from around the region heard from key note speakers – Christine Murray (Amacus) and Paul Johnstone (Muckle) – providing advice, case studies and discussion to gain an understanding of the current rules and implications and steps that can be taken to protect their business.

The event proved a massive success and we hope to work with our partners again to provide further sessions to support local employers to realise the benefits of the workplace health agenda.

Taking place in May and June, organisations participating in the North East Better Health at Work Award, were offered the opportunity to achieve the RSPH Level 2 qualification in ‘Understanding Health Improvement’ to reward their employees considerable efforts in driving forward their workplace health initiatives.

In total 17 individuals participating in this training from 13 organisations across the region. Although we are still awaiting results from the Hartlepool course, all candidates who attended in Gateshead successfully achieved the qualification.

Amacus’ record in delivering RSPH makes impressive reading with 98% of the 128 individuals who have attended the course in the 14-months successfully achieving this nationally recognised qualification.

This invite came as a result of the long-standing partnership with UnionLearn born out of the resounding success of our delivery to Department of Work & Pensions employees at Tyne View in Newcastle.

This proved to be an excellent event with union members clearly demonstrating the need to invest in the higher level learning of their employees. Significant interest was shown in Amacus accredited development programmes which we hope to tell you more about in the future.
